China loves MMOs. It also loves Plants vs. Zombies, although it has been less enthusiastic about the microtransaction-tastic Plants vs. Zombies 2. But is someone planning to combine the two? Tencent, the China distributor for the Popcap game, has been teasing a new Plants vs. Zombies game with a teaser website and the above image, all of which suggest something new in the series.

The loading screen for Tencent’s PvZ teaser page: ‘In the summer of 2009 a sunflower became a star. 4 years later, it’s still a star; what will change?’
The hints have led many to speculate that what Tencent could be bringing to the series may be massively multiplayer online gaming. The image above, for example, appears to depict one zombie-infested house among many in a larger neighborhood. Could that mean the next step in the series for China is an MMO? Or perhaps deeper integration with Tencent’s social media platforms (like WeChat)?
We’ll have to wait to find out, but not too long; the teaser site invites visitors to come back on November 29 to find out more. It looks like everyone’s favorite sunflower and its pals aren’t done with their China journey just yet.
