Tencent drops prices for dozens of League of Legends skins in China

Chinese gamers have long complained about Tencent’s monetization practices, but the company has just taken a step that’s likely to make lots of League of Legends players happy: it has lowered the price of more than thirty skins quite significantly. It has also lowered the prices of 14 champions.

China uses a different virtual payment system than the Riot servers, so directly comparing prices is tough. But to choose one example, the price of Deep Terror Thresh, which was 6900 points, has been adjusted down to 4500 points. Buying 6900 points from Tencent would cost about RMB 66.50 (about $11). This new price reduction brings the cost of that skin down to less than $8, which puts it more in line with the price on Riot servers (where Deep Terror Thresh costs 975 RP, or the equivalent of about $7 if you purchase the 1380 RP pack).

In other words: Chinese players used to be paying significantly more than their Western counterparts for some of these skins. Thanks to these price reductions, they’re now paying prices closer to what the rest of the world gets…for the 30+ skins that have been reduced, anyway.

Most of the other reduced skins have been dropped by at least 1000 points, and some are seeing much steeper price cuts. The reason, according to Tencent, is that the company wants to lower the purchase threshold so that more players try purchasing and playing with skins. The champion prices have been reduced to make the financial burden easier on new players who want to buy champions with real money rather than IP.

If you play on the Chinese servers and are wondering about the new pricing, you can find the full list of reduced champions and skins here (in Chinese, obviously). Also note that a few skins actually went up in price in addition to all the price reductions.
