Gree Ventures, a Tokyo-based venture capital firm that’s among the most active in Southeast Asia, has secured US$37 million in committed capital for its second fund, it announced today. It aims to hit US$60 million by the end of 2016.
With the new capital, Gree Ventures seeks to invest US$300,000 to US$2 million per seed or early-stage internet startup. It’s looking for opportunities in India, Japan, and Southeast Asia, and plans to lead rounds more often than not.
Gree Ventures is a subsidiary of Gree, a Japanese gaming and social networking company. However, unlike traditional corporate VCs, Gree Ventures doesn’t invest in areas aligned with its parent company. In fact, it explicitly stated that it won’t back content and gaming businesses (these are left to its parent company to invest in).
The VC firm has made over 30 investments across Japan and Southeast Asia. According to Tech in Asia’s data, it’s also one of the most active VCs in Indonesia by recent number of deals made.
The firm is headed by CEO and partner Yusuke Amano, partner Tatsuo Tsutsumi, and principal Albert Shyy. Nikhil Kapur is an associate.
