Singapore Gets On-Demand Ice Cream Today via Uber

png

Singapore in the summer is hot. But taxi app Uber is aiming to help Singaporean citizens beat the heat, at least for a day. Today (Friday, July 19) only, Singapore Uber users can use their app to summon an ice-cream truck and get on-demand ice cream they can pay with using their Uber accounts. So if you’re feeling hot today, you don’t need to walk anywhere to get a cold and tasty treat — just plop yourself down on the sidewalk and fire up your Uber app.

Of course, there are some caveats. Ice cream trucks will only be available from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M., and you’ll need a few other people willing to spend money as the Singapore minimum is five people and $15 to summon a truck. Still, Singaporeans should consider themselves lucky — Singapore is the only city in Asia to be enjoying this service today.

We don’t generally write about promotional stunts like this on Tech in Asia, but the idea of summoning an ice cream truck with your smartphone is simply too damn cool to ignore. And it’s likely to be great marketing for Uber too; in heat like this, everyone’s going to want to know how you got an ice cream truck to come to your exact location just by pressing buttons on your smartphone.

Aside from Singapore, Uber has also launched its private car service in Taipei and Seoul, but they’re not getting any ice-cream today.
