InMobi Eyes HTML5 Mobile Ads, Acquires Sprout

inmobi-sproutAn India-based company acquires a U.S-based company. Fascinating! We don’t often hear such news, as it is often goes the other way. InMobi which claims to be the world’s largest independent mobile ad network, has acquired Sprout to strengthen its HTML5 mobile ads department. Sprout is the creator of AdVine

, a cloud-based software which help clients to create gorgeous HTML5 ads across all mobile platforms. Most impressively, AdVine’s clients include Facebook, Doubleclick, Intel, EA, and Walt Disney. The acquisition will help InMobile provide HTML5 mobile ads to consumers over 165 countries.

Sprout is venture-backed by Polaris Venture Partners and has offices in Honolulu and San Francisco. Here’s a short AdVine demo:

Naveen Tewari, founder and CEO of InMobi, said in the statement:

Sprout’s technology solves a critical need for the industry by helping bring engaging mobile ad experiences to consumers all around the globe. The acquisition fits perfectly with our vision to enable the mobile ecosystem with best of breed technology and services. The entire industry will benefit from the combination of our technology and operational footprint on five continents and Sprout’s platform.

Interestingly, this acquisition will not stop Sprout from working with other competitive ad networks. “We will continue to work with all existing partners, including competitive ad networks, globally,” said Carnet Williams, CEO and co-founder of Sprout.

This move has effectively brought HTML5 mobile ads into Asia, where inMobi has huge reach. It’s sad news for Singapore-based 2359 Media though, as it recently launched Mobdis Pro, also a HTML5 mobile ad building platform. Things are getting interesting in Asia, aren’t they?
