China-based ByteDance’s TikTok Now has seen over five million downloads on the Google Play Store since launching last month.
The platform, which is a standalone mobile app for global markets outside the US, prompts users to take a photo or video with their front and back phone cameras at a random time every day, aiming to produce a more authentic social media experience.
However, TikTok Now has faced growing copycat accusations on the basis of certain similarities it shares with popular social app BeReal.
TikTok Now is also struggling to amass favorable reviews and app ratings on the Google Play Store due to the allegations.
Founded in 2020, BeReal also sends random daily push notifications, encouraging users to take a photo or video with their phone’s front and back cameras at the same time.
“I will not be using the app in future in favor of original app idea implementation by BeReal,” one user wrote in a review for TikTok Now on the Google Play Store.

BeReal recently topped 53 million worldwide installs across Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store, and it has seen its monthly active users jump by 2,254% since January 2022, according to research from Sensor Tower.
