Ninja Van board member nets $2.8m for his firm in Monk’s Hill-led round

Doyobi, a Singapore-based edtech platform for teachers, has raised US$2.8 million in a Monk’s Hill Ventures-led pre-series A round.

Tres Monos Capital, Novus Paradigm Capital, and XA Network also joined the round, as did angel investors like Quek Siu Rui, CEO of Carousell; Oswald Yeo and Seah Ying Cong, co-founders of Glints; and Reuben Lai, head of Grab Financial Group.

Doyobi’s was launched by John Tan, an angel investor and a board member of Ninja Van, in 2020. The edtech firm helps teachers create interactive science, tech, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lessons, which incorporate videos, quizzes, and projects to make the learning experience better for kids. More than 2,000 teachers across 10 countries now use the platform, with Indonesia and the Philippines being the firm’s biggest markets.

Doyobi’s latest raise will fund the launch of new cohort-based courses for sharpening teaching skills. The company will also pour funding into Teachers as Humans, an online community that offers peer support and personal development opportunities to educators.

Tan is also a leader at The Obama Foundation, which runs a one-year leadership development and community engagement program in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We believe teachers are integral to transforming the classroom experience. Doyobi is focused on empowering teachers with the resources and skills to deliver STEM and 21st-century skills in the classroom,” said Tan.
