US considers pushing ByteDance to sell local TikTok unit
Security members of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) are contemplating pushing for the sale of TikTok’s US unit in order to quell national security concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported.
TikTok has been working with the US government for two years on a solution “to address all reasonable national security concerns about TikTok in the US,” a company spokesperson told Insider.
“We believe those concerns can be fully resolved, and CFIUS is currently considering a comprehensive solution that addresses key concerns around corporate governance, content recommendation and moderation, and data security and access,” the spokesperson said.
Senator Marco Rubio, who represents Florida, previously submitted a bipartisan bill to ban TikTok in the US. The platform collects user data, which by Chinese law, can be legally shared with the Chinese government.
Last year, India permanently banned TikTok as well as 58 other Chinese apps due to safety and privacy concerns.
