In brief: India’s first edtech unicorn raises $100m from General Atlantic, says report

Online tutoring startup Byju’s valuation has reached US$2 billion following a US$100 million investment by private equity player General Atlantic India in a single tranche for a five percent stake, sources aware of the deal confirmed.

Bengaluru-based Byju is India’s largest education technology startup and has crossed the US$13.6 million monthly revenue mark.

Byju is a video tutorial website that helps Indian students ace all kinds of examinations that was set up in 2011. Soon, it began offering online video-based coaching for the Common Admission Test – an entrance exam for many Indian universities.

It then gradually expanded into more products, with teaching materials for all grade levels as well as personalized lessons. In 2017, Byju expanded into the US. In March this year, its valuation surpassed US$1 billion.
