Hi readers,
Gamers, hereโs a question for you: Would you like to make a career out of gaming? Iโm not talking about competing in esports or streaming on Twitch. Rather, what if the games actually pay you?
This sounds ludicrous, but it is actually a real thing. What I have just described is basically the essence of blockchain gaming, which lets you potentially make money through cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens in a game.
Today we look at:
- A new genre of gaming
- The fintech startup thatโs banking funding but is yet to fully cash in on its product
- Other newsy highlights such as the end of a strike among Gojek drivers and Shopeeโs quiet expansion in Latin America

World of blockchain: A new era of gaming

Believe it or not, blockchain is helping gamers make money. In Australia, a guy makes US$780 to US$3,900 during competition weeks from a blockchain game. In fact, he recently cashed out US$17,000 from his earnings to make a deposit on his new house.
- The game in question is F1 Delta Time, an auto racing game thatโs built on blockchain technology and allows players to exchange the in-game currency Revv for ether, bitcoin, or USDT. This type of play-to-earn online game is on the rise these days.
- The gamemaster: Hong Kong-based Animoca Brands is the publisher of F1 Delta Time as well as other play-to-earn blockchain games including The Sandbox. If you find the companyโs name familiar, youโre not alone. Animoca made a splash last month when it raised US$88.8 million at a US$1 billion valuation.
- US$111,111: Thatโs how much a tokenized car on F1 Delta Time was sold in 2019 to a mystery buyer. And in 2020, that same person purchased a 5% segment of an in-game track for US$222,000.
