Singapore opens world’s first commercial cultured meat facility

• Esco Aster, a Singapore-based contract development and manufacturing firm, received a license to make cultured meat for commercial sale in July. 
• The company started operations at its facility in Ayer Rajah Crescent in the same month, marking the first commercial cultured-meat production plant not just in the city-state but also the world.

• The development comes amid a race to move lab-grown meat to supermarket shelves and dinner plates as more companies that cultivate cell-based meat – also known as “clean” or “cultured” meat – start to emerge.
• In July, Singapore-based foodtech startup Shiok Meats raised an undisclosed sum from Woowa Brothers, Asia Holdings, CJ CheilJedang, and Vinh Hoan to build a production unit for its cultured meat products in Singapore by 2023.
