Zenius confirms slashing another 30 jobs

Indonesia-based edtech firm Zenius has slashed 30 jobs in a new round of layoffs, a company spokesperson confirmed to Tech in Asia.

In a statement, Zenius said the decision was made to ensure its sustainability and long-term growth amid the current economic crisis that has been crippling the startup world. “All aspects of the business are being optimized to improve efficiency, including a reduction in workforce,” the company added.

Affected workers will receive severance pay according to local regulations as well as retain access to their health insurance benefits and wellness counseling until March 30.

In 2022, Zenius implemented at least two rounds of job cuts. The first round in May affected 200 employees or around 20% of its total manpower at that time. The company didn’t specify how many were affected by the second layoff in August, but it revealed that almost all divisions shed jobs.

Zenius saw its rise at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as Indonesian students were forced to study from home. In February 2022, it acquired Primagama, a local offline tutoring platform, as it sought to perfect its hybrid online-offline services. The startup has raised about US$40 million, according to Tech in Asia data.

Major competitor Ruangguru also laid off hundreds of employees last year despite its accelerated growth earlier.
