Valve and the Dota 2 community have outdone themselves. The International 2014 (TI4)’s prize pool has hit its final stretch goal of $10 million, unlocking all 22 stretch goals with an additional surprise reward for an Unusual Techies Taunt. That’s around three a half times the prize pool of $2.8 million from the previous International’s and more than six times of the base prize pool of $1.6 million.
TI4’s prize pool is the first eight-digit prize pool in both the history of The International and in eSports tournaments worldwide. It is also the first time the Compendium has broken its final stretch goal twice.

The International Interactive Compendium was first introduced last year and was able to add $1.2 million to the base prize pool. It initially had three stretch goals, which were increased to seven after overwhelming response. It had a final goal of $3.2 million, which wasn’t reached.
When the Compendium was released this year, it had thirteen stretch goals and an initial goal of $6 million, which was achieved around ten days after it was first released. After the addition of new stretch goals, it took the community a little over a month to hit the $10 million prize pool. Considering each Compendium purchase of $9.99 only adds $2.50 to the prize pool, this is an impressive feat.
Valve has not announced further stretch goals, but this seems unlikely as TI4 is going to be held in less than a month. What is clear, however, is that the prize pool is still growing. With at least $5 million for first prize, whoever wins this year’s tournament is going to be really, really rich.
