If you are keeping track of Singapore’s gadget space, you’ve likely heard of iTwin, the wireless file sharing USB drive. The hardware startup has earned several accolades and most recently won the CES Innovations Design and Engineering Honor.
Lux Anantharaman, CEO and co-founder of iTwin, was nice enough to meet up before our coffee chat at Startups in Asia to talk more about iTwin and startups in Singapore at large. He humbly notes that iTwin isn’t successful by all measures.
He has several experiences to share, especially when it comes to building a hardware startup in Singapore. To my surprise, Lux says that Singapore is one of the best places to build a hardware startup as we have a strong hardware talent pool here. That’s interesting to note, considering that most people might assume China or Taiwan would be better because of low manufacturing cost. He also said that hardware startups are “the way to go in Southeast Asia” and that it is also easier to scale compared to a software startup.
We also discussed how budding hardware startups can kickstart with zero capital, especially when most investors aren’t too keen to invest in a hardware company.
