The Southeast Asian games market is booming, with an estimated combined revenue of US$4.4 billion for PC online and mobile games. The figure is projected to grow to US$7.5 billion in 2020, says research firm Niko Partners.
In light of this, Chinese gaming giant Tencent is expanding its reach in the region. Garena, Sea’s digital entertainment arm, will have the right of first refusal to publish Tencent’s mobile and PC games in Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Over the next five years, the two companies will identify strategic opportunities to distribute and promote top titles from Tencent’s portfolio.
Garena has already published a number of Tencent titles, such as Arena of Valor, League of Legends, and Ring of Elysium. Other notable games published by Tencent include PUBG Mobile and FIFA Online 3.
“Our long-term partnership and collaborations with Garena on key titles have been successful, and we are glad to further deepen our strategic partnership through this arrangement,” said Tencent president Martin Lau.
