The growing Lazada mafia
This is an updated version of our previous post.
When Pierre Poignant, co-founder and former CEO of Lazada, announced earlier this month that his startup Branded Group had jumped from stealth mode to raising US$150 million in one round, it evoked a sense of déja vu.

Apart from Poignant, other ex-Lazada bosses and executives have shown a knack for building rising startups. This comes as no surprise as many of them came up with their business concepts after seeing real pain points while working at the Alibaba-backed firm.
Poignant’s new company focuses on consolidating smaller brands that sell on Amazon Marketplace. There’s no question that his credibility, drawn from co-founding one of Southeast Asia’s largest ecommerce sites, helped boost Branded’s profile.
As the region’s tech landscape matures and millions of new consumers have shifted online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this seems like the right time to update Tech in Asia’s list of the Lazada mafia.
