Groupon.com Acquires Groupon.cn [UPDATED]

Update from Groupon: “These are just rumors. We have not. If that changes, I’ll be sure to confirm,” a Groupon spokeswoman told us. Gaopeng.com will remain as Groupon China, at least for now.

grouponcnBreaking news this afternoon from our friend Gang Lu over on Technode. He is reporting that group buying giant Groupon.com acquired Groupon.cn in a deal “signed today.”

The latter is one of many Groupon clones in China that made up crowd of competitors for the original Groupon, which recently entered China as Gaopeng.com. According to numbers from iResearch earlier this month, Groupon.cn was bringing in about 18.77 million monthly visitors.

This raises the question of how Groupon will manage it’s new Chinese domain surplus. Will they jettison Gaopeng.com? We’ll have to wait and see how this domain dilemma plays out.

Groupon has been working hard to make progress in the Asia region this year. In mid-March the company launched Groupon Korea at the groupon.kr domain. And then this month the company also acquired Disdus in Indonesia. Groupon faces a similar “attack of the clones” there.

Back in January, Groupon picked up Malaysia’s Groupmore as well as India’s SoSasta. And before that in December, Groupon acquired Singapore’s Beeconomic, Taiwan’s Atlaspost, and Hong Kong’s uBuyiBuy.
