Letter to readers: GoBear goes missing, edfintech’s billion-dollar opportunity
Dear readers,
Here’s a little secret: Last Friday, Tech in Asia published some eye-popping numbers about India’s business-to-business ecommerce unicorn Udaan, which sustained a US$315 million loss on top of generating US$134 million in revenue.
As I was writing this, we were the only ones to have this story.
Of course, such huge losses are de rigueur in the startup world, and the question is whether the company’s massive upfront investment will pay off down the road.
Udaan didn’t comment, but we hope that it will do so down the line.
Anyway, our big focus last week was fintech – again – and we’ve got quite a triple-header for you.
We analyzed the reasons behind GoBear’s surprising and sudden closure, making us the only media outlet to peer under its hood. (We can afford to, thanks to our paying subscribers.)

We also looked at the big picture and visualized the key players in Singapore’s thriving fintech space.
Yes, there are other such fintech maps around. But we’ll update ours regularly, and we’re building quite a collection of these visuals.
Last but not least, we examined education-focused fintech startups, a potential billion-dollar opportunity in Indonesia. We’ve been leading the coverage of edfintech in Southeast Asia, and this space is definitely one to watch.
There’s plenty more we hope to cover, and we’re planning to invest in even more editorial talent and resources to make this happen. I’ll share more soon.
In the meantime, help us improve our work by subscribing to Tech in Asia.
Cheers,
