Dhruv Sawhney has taken the role of CEO at Rize, an agritech joint venture formed by Wavemaker Impact, Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Temasek, and GenZero.

Sawhney will lead Rize to implement the most effective strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in rice cultivation.

Previously, he served as the COO of India-based agritech firm Nurture.farm, which has onboarded over 2.5 million farmers and 100,000 agricultural retailers in the country.

Sawhney also founded a food supply chain startup called Wotu Technologies in 2016, which was acquired by Zomato in 2018.

“After enteric emissions, rice is the second-largest driver of agricultural emissions globally. Technology exists to decarbonize rice cultivation, but it requires farmers to change their behavior,” Sawhney said in a statement.

Rize, which was first introduced in October 2022, aims to decarbonize rice cultivation in Southeast Asia and the rest of Asia. Its first two markets are Indonesia and Vietnam, where the company already has local teams and conducted pilots for its solution.

Wavemaker founding partner Marie Cheong, who is also a Rize board member, said the joint venture plans to expand its operations in the second half of this year to further test its solution, but she didn’t provide further details.
