Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi today unveiled yet another gadget designed for people’s homes rather than their pockets – the Mi Robot Vacuum.
It comes five months after Xiaomi signaled a big shift towards making home gadgets and appliances. That was when the Beijing-based startup unveiled a smart rice cooker.
The new Mi Robot Vacuum looks a lot like a Roomba, the US brand that’s arguably the best-known in terms of autonomous vacuums.
The Mi Robot Vacuum has 12 sensors to find its way around a house and a brush that can self-adjust for different surfaces. With a sizable battery, it can do 2.5 hours of cleaning on a single charge. Like many suck robo-vacs, it zooms back to its charging dock when low on power.
Priced at US$250, it goes on sale in China on September 6. The cheapest Roomba is US$375.
There’s no word on how good it is at avoiding pooch poop.
