Good news for startups trying to hire: India’s youngsters are dying to work for you

So you think working at a large corporation is hot? A huge chunk of young Indians thinks startups are hotter.

The Inshorts Youth of the Nation Poll says 68 percent of Indians would prefer to work with a startup than with a large corporation this year. Inshorts is a startup that delivers news in 60 words.

The week-long poll was conducted on the Inshorts Android app from January 26 to February 2. More than 140,000 respondents gave more than 1 million responses to 30 questions that dominated the headlines.

One of these questions was: in 2016, would you prefer to work with a small startup instead of a large corporation? As many as 42,958 people responded to it. Of these, 29,306 users voted ‘yes’, 4,760 voted ‘no’, and 8,892 users voted ‘not informed enough.’

Clearly, the charm of startups is growing. India has over 19,400 tech startups, of which 5,000 were started in 2015 alone. Within one year, the number of startups grew 40 percent and created 80,000 to 85,000 jobs.

Free Basics

And here’s another interesting conclusion drawn from the survey received.

Respondents were asked if they favored Facebook’s Free Basics service. Of the 20,297 people who answered the question, 13,073 voted ‘no,’ 4,530 said ‘yes,’ and 2,694 said ‘not informed enough.’

The poll was conducted before February 8, when the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) barred telcos from differential pricing of data, in effect blocking Free Basics in India. But as far as the widespread sentiments against Free Basics in India go, it was bang on.
