Good news for Malaysian game devs: MDeC announces more support

Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) made three surprise announcements last night just before the close of Games in Asia and l337 Accelerator’s joint game developer meetup in Kuala Lumpur.

MDeC representative Siow Aik Wee said that submissions for 2014’s Intellectual Property Creators’ Challenge (IPCC) would open after the country’s Hari Raya celebrations. This places its approximate date either at the very close of July or at the start of August.

The next two pieces of good news were also mentioned at the event, though official word has yet to be given.

MDeC will be collaborating with an AAA company based both in the UK and in Malaysia (coughcodemasterscough), though it doesn’t want to name the studio just yet. MDeC will be offering sponsored trips for four individuals to head to the UK for “on-job training”, where they will be able to learn from this studio. Flights and accommodation will both be sponsored.

(See: Singapore’s Booster Pack studio received nearly $1.5m in funding last week, but who is it?)

In other unofficial news, MDeC will also soon be helping indie studios with marketing their games, and called for the studios present at the meetup to start submitting both complete and incomplete games. There was no specification on what platforms the games should be on.

This sponsored marketing will be done with the help of a “big company” in the industry; we’re guessing it’s possibly one that has recently proclaimed its love for indie developers.

This certainly is pretty big news for the fledgling game development industry in Malaysia. Here’s hoping that these deals all get shook on! Meanwhile, here are all the instructions you need on submitting your game or yourself for consideration from MDeC.
