Singapore taxi major ComfortDelGro (CDG) and Indonesian ride-hailing firm Gojek have inked an agreement to explore giving the latter access to the former’s taxis on the Gojek app.

Gojek currently has 2.6 million driver partners in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore. Meanwhile, ComfortDelGro’s fleet includes 34,000 buses, taxis, and rental vehicles in Singapore, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, China, Ireland, and Malaysia.

In Singapore, the two go up against homegrown player Grab, which had 5 million registered driver partners across eight countries as of December 2020.

CDG and Gojek will also explore other areas of collaboration such as transition to electric vehicles and additional revenue opportunities, as well as insurance, driver training, and vehicle maintenance support for driver-partners.

The companies said they look to address a driver shortage issue facing the industry with the move. “With more commuters on the roads, this is a win-win for all,” said Lien Choong Luen, general manager of Gojek Singapore.

CDG and Gojek will announce more details on the deal over the next few months.

Gojek is the ride-hailing arm of GoTo, a digital ecosystem formed through its collaboration with Tokopedia. GoTo reported a 30% jump in revenue to US$375 million in the third quarter of the year, which it attributed mainly to growing take rates in its ecommerce and on-demand businesses.
