China’s top tech CEOs join in on ‘ice bucket challenge’ craze for ALS

The “ice bucket challenge” craze that’s flooded social media to raise awareness and money for ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease) has now spread to China. Several of the country’s top CEOs – Xiaomi’s Lei Jun, Alibaba’s Jack Ma, Qihoo’s Zhou Hongyi, and many more – will emulate their western counterparts – Apple’s Tim Cook, Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos – in dumping a bucket of ice cold water over their heads and posting the video on Weibo (hat-tip to QQ Tech).

For those unfamiliar with the challenge, each person who dumps a bucket of ice water on their head challenges three more people to do the same. If someone refuses, the penalty is donating US$100 to the ALS Association. The stunt has raised millions for ALS so far.

Youku CEO Victor Koo and OnePlus founder Pete Lau have already completed the challenge and kicked off the trend among the other Chinese tech CEOs. Others have accepted but haven’t posted their videos yet. We’ll add more below as the day progresses.

Here’s Pete Lau’s video:
