Xiaomi’s new TV is a curved behemoth that’s thinner than your phone

Xiaomi announced its newest TV today, and it’s something to behold. The 65-inch (1.65 m) panel is just 5.9 millimeters thick and… it’s curved.

The TV is dubbed the Mi TV 3S, and will retail for US$1,380. The Samsung-built screen has a 4K resolution along with integrated Bluetooth and wifi. It is also accompanied by Xiaomi’s speaker bar, and includes MIUI TV (Xiaomi’s TV OS) included within the device, which gives users access to Xiaomi’s library of movies, music, and TV apps.

The company has also launched a 43-inch (1.1 m) version of the TV which features a normal non-curved screen, and is nearly twice as thick, coming in at 10.9 millimeters. That device will retail for (considerably cheaper) US$276.

In the past, Xiaomi’s TVs had, like its phone business, aimed to deliver high quality for a low price. Last year’s flagship TV measured a 47-inch screen and cost just under US$500, which made it one of the most affordable options at that size.

But with its new release, Xiaomi hasn’t shied away from going up-market. Crossing the US$1,000 threshold – and not by a little bit, either – shows that the company is interested in adding some premium flare. The new line of TVs will be on sale in China on March 31.
