Just recently, a woman was murdered as a result of Facebook jealousy.
Today, we received news that a woman from Missouri got conned to wire about $4,000 to a “friend” in England.
This woman received a help request message from her “friend” saying that she and husband got detained in London and needed the money to be released.
The real friend, Grace Parry, told the Southeast Missourian newspaper that her Facebook account got hacked into and someone else was posing as her.
Facebook said Internet scams like this aren’t uncommon. But there are definitely ways to minimize such incidents. Instead of relying wholly on Facebook to create more security, we can also put in effort to avoid getting hacked. Changing your password and deleting cookies regularly are ways of prevention.
What to do if your account was hacked?
This case has shown hackers’ ability to “tap” into Facebook’s rich resource, sending a warning signal to Facebook’s 250 million users.
In case your account got hacked (e.g. if you can’t log in), please inform Facebook and your friends about this matter. It will prevent a similar scam from happening. If you received such help requests from friends, do verify it with them or relevant authorities before you take any further actions.
