In brief: Facebook launches livestreaming revenue model for Thai gamers

Facebook is drawing gaming creators in Thailand by launching a new revenue model to compete with YouTube for the younger demographic.

The Facebook Stars feature allows viewers to support their favourite gaming creators by sending “stars” while watching live gaming streams.

Each “star” can be converted to a donation – starting from US$0.03 – by charging to viewers’ credit cards or mobile phone bills.

Facebook launched its Gaming Creator Program in Thailand in June. It’s the third country after the US and Brazil to welcome the initiative, which is aimed at helping so-called “gaming creators”  – such as “gamecasters” who livestream their playing sessions – to gain wider exposure, build communities, and tap revenue generation opportunities.

An estimated 1,000 out of Thailand’s 18 million Thai gamers regularly livestream their gaming.
