No matter how “snoopy” India might be, companies like Facebook understand the importance of this market for their business. That’s why the popular social network is now taking its operations in the country one step further, hiring a Head of Public Policy for India. According to a job notice posted on its careers section:
The Head of Public Policy, India will be the primary contact with the Indian government and policymakers and will advance our mission to make the world more open and connected. They will work closely with the Privacy and Public Policy global team and represent Facebook at appropriate industry associations. This position is based in New Delhi.
The new role will involve monitoring India’s political environment for important policy issues, as well as legal and social matters in states that would affect the social network. The person would advise on policy challenges, helping Facebook teams by guiding development of products, services, and policies. They would also represent the social network giant in meetings with governments and elected officials.
What does it mean for India?
This move shows just how serious Facebook is about the Indian market. This is good, because the government is very serious about the social network as well. Two weeks ago we reported that the Indian government urged Facebook to expand its operation in other cities, and promised to support that expansion too.
Facebook is responding well, as this effort should help it stay on the same page with the Indian Governments. The company can now work in close coordination with the government, and hopefully avoid any potential censorship or privacy pitfalls.
