Global Brain through its JGC MIRAI Innovation Fund has invested in Biome, a biodiversity monitoring services provider. The investment amount was not disclosed.
Biome, a startup from Kyoto University, aims to build a platform for environmental conservation using big data on the distribution of organisms worldwide.
The company has developed artificial intelligence that identifies plant and animal species from images and operates the Biome app, which reached 700,000 downloads as of February this year.
Biome also offers a package that supports businesses in complying with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) framework for integrating nature-related risks into financial decision-making. This package uses a database covering 100,000 species, along with analysis and visualization of biodiversity information.
Global Brain chose to invest in Biome due to the company’s data and expertise in biodiversity and the potential of the TNFD-related market.
The VC firm plans to work with JGC Group, a Japan-based engineering conglomerate, to support Biome’s business growth.
