The 5 Warcraft 3 custom maps that need to be in Dota 2

It’s been about two weeks now since Dota 2’s workshop tools expanded to allow custom game creation. While the tools are still in alpha, fans are already hard at work tinkering with the game that itself was born from a custom map of Warcraft 3 (WC3). It was that modding scene that also spawned the tower defense genre, so hopes are high for what modders can achieve with Dota 2.

Dota-inspired classics like Pudge Wars and Invoker Wars are already well under way, but which custom maps do you want to see make a return on Steam? We list our most anticipated Dota 2 mods below.

Pudge Wars

It doesn’t come as a surprise to many Warcraft 3 fans that Pudge Wars is one of the first WC3 custom maps to appear on the Steam workshop. Dota 2 players had been playing modified versions of the game since the ability to all play as the same hero in custom games first arrived.

But the original Pudge Wars was a purer experience—two teams of up to five of the eponymous hero, with an impassable river between them. Each Pudge could also only use their infamous hook (and sometimes a mine-laying ability) to pull enemies across to their side of the river, or pull snagged friends back.

The chaos that ensues from such a simple premise, and the game’s rewarding of high-skill play, assured this map’s popularity, while its simplicity guarantees that it will be among the first to see a polished release in Dota 2’s workshop.

Footman Frenzy

Before Dota became the e-sport it is today, some casual fans used to declare Footman Frenzy to be “more Dota than Dota”. While it’s never had a comparable competitive edge, it’s easy to see what they mean.

Four teams of three heroes face off from their base in each corner of the small map, but each hero has their own creep spawns. These creeps are player-controlled and so can be sent out continuously, in waves like in Dota, or stockpiled for one massive rush.

Also key to the game is that these creeps can be upgraded along branching paths by each individual player—so you might change your minions to faster-spawning zergling-type troops while your teammates opt for ranged units and slow-but-steady tankier units. Or all three of you could go for the zergling-alikes and flood the entire map (probably crashing some poor soul’s computer in the process).
