DeNA’s operating profits down 42% this past quarter

DeNA Co., Japan’s massive mobile internet service company, has reported a fairly substantial dip in revenue and profits in the past quarter. When compared to the same quarter of the previous year DeNA had 20% less revenue and 42% less operating profit in Q3. Take a look at the financial summary DeNA provided us.

Financial Summary (shown in billions of yen)

Item Q3, 2013 Q3, 2012 YoY Change Q2, 2013 QoQ change
Revenue 41.7 52.3 -20% 47.6 -12%
Operating Profit 11.4 19.9 -42% 15.1 -24%
Profit before tax 12.7 20.5 -38% 15.2 -16%

Even with the discouraging change in profit, it should be noted that DeNA by no means saw a loss, and had $408 million in revenue this past quarter. The President and CEO of DeNA, Isao Moriyasu, had this to say:

DeNA is committed to its large-scale game production strategy for both the app and browser markets. By establishing improved development processes, we have scaled our ability to deliver numerous high-quality games each quarter. We’re seeing encouraging signs from many of our games and new services in the mobile app market, and it remains an exciting opportunity for growth for our company.

Let’s hope that DeNA’s upcoming release of both the new Attack on Titan and Mame Shiba Puzzle games will help Q4 to be better than the last.
