No Crysis for Crytek as it Opens Shanghai Studio

The German games studio Crytek, makers of the CryEngine that powers its online titles like Crysis and Warface, is setting up a new studio in Shanghai – its second such base in Asia. We recently reported that Shanghai is home to 227 gaming companies which produce 30 percent of the value of China’s games industry.

The new studio will be run as a subsidiary called Crytek Shanghai Software Co. It’ll work on CryEngine, reports GamesIndustry today, and be another hub for the firm’s Asian business.

One such local partnership is its deal with Tencent (HKG:0700), China’s biggest social gaming platform, which will use CryEngine3 for a major future title. Tencent also runs Warface in China. But it’s not clear if that client might defect after Tencent bought a stake in rival Epic Games, makers of the Unreal Engine, two months ago.

Crytek MD Avni Yerli said of the move:

We see a lot of potential in the Chinese market, and have learned a lot from the close relationship with our eight existing Chinese licensees, whose backgrounds range from game development to architecture visualisation, and interactive exhibition to serious simulation. The formation of Crytek Shanghai builds on the base we first established in Asia with Crytek Seoul, and offers invaluable strategic opportunities as we continue to expand our reach into the world’s largest market.

The Shanghai studio’s GM will be Areil Cai, who described the new commitment as a way for Crytek to have “an even closer working relationship with partners across China.”
