According to the company website, there are over 500 openings in Seoul and 17 open job positions in Singapore.
“We’re on an ambitious journey to build the authoritative destination for digital content,” wrote the platform’s head of product, Andrew S Y, in a LinkedIn post today. Coupang Play has been building a library of content including TV series, movies, live sports, kids shows and educational materials.
SoftBank-backed Coupang is one of the largest ecommerce companies in Asia. It offers services such as same-day and next-morning deliveries of groceries and general merchandise, delivery of prepared foods through Coupang Eats, and video-streaming through Coupang Play.
The ecommerce major recently posted an operating profit of US$77 million in the third quarter, its first operating profit so far. The company’s September quarter revenue was also up 27% year over year at US$5.1 billion.
The hiring announcement comes at a point when other streaming services are announcing job cuts globally. US-headquartered Netflix has laid off a total of 450 employees this year. China-based video-streaming service iQiyi also reportedly planned mass layoffs last December.
