Hello readers,
We’re celebrating International Women’s Day today! So let’s take a moment to recognize and support our female bosses, colleagues, and employees. The crew at Tech in Asia have taken things up a notch and prepared a ton of exciting content this week to celebrate women doing incredible things in Southeast Asia’s tech scene.
Keep your eyes peeled because I wasn’t kidding when I said a ton. Our writer, Stefanie Yeo, even confessed that at this point, “I owed the copy editors so many cups of coffee.”
Today we look at:
- A cloud kitchen operator’s aggressive expansion
- How Indonesia’s Hangry plans to become a global F&B brand
- Other newsy highlights such as the acquisition of another Singapore-based startup and ByteDance’s move to build a Clubhouse-like app

Rebel Foods gets fired up

While the pandemic has left brick-and-mortar restaurants starving the past year, cloud kitchens are thriving like never before. This has propelled Rebel Foods, one of India’s first cloud kitchen operators, to launch an aggressive expansion in Southeast Asia.
- How it started: Rebel Foods was launched in 2004 as Faasos, a quick-service restaurant chain. Due to soaring rental prices and increasing online food-ordering behavior among consumers, Faasos shut down all physical stores and became a cloud kitchen in 2011.
- How it’s going: Today, Rebel Foods is valued at US$700 million, runs 350 cloud kitchens in India, and operates 50 more in Asia, the UK, and United Arab Emirates. The pandemic has also pushed its average order values up by 60% to 70%, according to Raghav Joshi, CEO of Rebel Foods’ India business unit.
- Bigger fish to fry: Rebel Foods is also undergoing a radical change in its business model. This new model, which has already attracted US burger chain Wendy’s, will open up a new revenue stream and help the company speed up its expansion overseas.
