Sources: ByteDance to develop Clubhouse-like app for China
“TikTok owner ByteDance is working on a Clubhouse-like app for China, as the global success of the US-based audio chat service inspires a rush of copycats in the country,” Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Details:
- ByteDance’s plans on coming up with a Clubhouse-like app for China are in the early stages.
- Xiaomi is also reworking its Mi Talk app into an invitation-only audio service for professionals.
Context:
- The increase in apps similar to Clubhouse comes after China blocked the platform on account of “uncontrolled public disclosure.”
- Earlier in February, the co-founder of Robinhood took to Clubhouse in a conversation with Elon Musk to defend the investment platform’s decision to restrict trading in GameStop.
