
This week was dominated by a loss, with the too-young death of Apple co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs. Even though it happened thousands of miles away, Chinese netizens mourned the loss of the kind of icon of innovation that their nation lacks.
Chinese news was thin on the ground, however, as much of the country kicked back for a week-long holiday. Thankfully, there was plenty of Apple and Alibaba news out of America, and a surprise from Baidu out of Singapore…

On Thursday morning, Penn-Olson went down to Beijing’s Apple Store to see how Chinese Apple fans were responding to the news of Jobs’s death, and to interview some of the grieving Jobs fans.
3. Xiaomi, Makers of Chinese iPhone Clone, Mock Steve Jobs’s Death on Weibo
Lei Jun, maker of the upcoming Xiaomi phone, provoked the ire of netizens with two tweets to Sina Weibo that cracked jokes about Jobs’ death. It proved the old adage that talentless people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Or something like that.
4. Baidu International Launches, Aimed at Global Brands
Baidu, in partnership with Singapore-based China Search International, launched Baidu International, which it touts as a service “to help advertisers globally launch, manage and optimize on Baidu.”
