The World Intellectual Property Organizations (WIPO) has just released its 2010 international trademark filings numbers, and the countries which showed the largest rate of growth were Korea and China, both at about 42%. The United States followed with 29.6%, then EU at 26.9%, and Japan at 20.2%.
That all sounds more than a little academic but trademark applications reflect new products and services coming to market, so after the economic troubles of the past few years this could be seen as a good sign for the Asian countries with strong growth. On a related note, China and Japan were also among the top countries in WIPO’s patent application rankings earlier this year.
We should point out that Korea’s filing total in 2010 was still pretty low, at 354. Compare that with China which has a 4.9% share of all applications world-wide and a total of 1,928 patent filings. Japan ranked eighth with a growth rate of 20.2%, but not so far behind China with 1,577 total filings last year.
