Casual Connect Asia 2014: Run Run Super V is looking fun fun super nice!

If you grew up in Asia, you probably grew up watching Super Sentai or the Power Rangers on TV. Altitude Games is paying tribute to our favorite spandex-donning super heroes in their latest game, Run Run Super V.

I got a chance to meet with the Altitude Games team at Casual Connect Asia, an event currently taking place in Singapore where indie game developers from all over Asia are gathering to host/attend talks and show off their latest offerings.

The Altitude Games team was sadly not wearing different-colored tights nor piloting mechs, but it was still awesome enough to let me give its game a spin.

The first thing that drew me to Run Run Super V was its colorful and energetic visuals, and the fact that it was not a pixel-graphic game, of which there were many at Casual Connect Asia. Iโ€™m not hating on pixel graphics, but it really was a refreshing change to see such well animated and fluid characters. The game looks good, and it has a great art style going for it.

Run Run Super V is basically a game split into threeโ€”the first segment plays like an endless runner where your power ranger runs across the screen and you jump to collect coins and Mario-stomp on enemy heads. The second segment plays like Flappy Bird somewhat, where you control a plane-like mech which you must weave through obstacles and into more coins to collect (superheroes are, apparently, underpaid). The final segment involves you combining your mech with four other mechs to form a giant robot to fight giant monsters. Cool stuff.

I got to try the first two segments, and while I felt that the gameplay was nothing new or innovative, it was polished and fun because the art and theme made it so.

The last segment with the huge mech battles does seem to have a lot of potential, though. At the moment, that segment is still a work in progress, but the demos they showed looked quite interesting. Altitude Games is trying to put the โ€˜Iโ€™ in โ€˜teamโ€™ by introducing multiplayer battles, where you can work with up to four other friends to take down the big baddies. It seems to be leaning towards a gesture mechanic, where you have to draw a โ€˜Vโ€™ on your screen to perform a signature V shaped sword slash. Color me intrigued!

Overall Iโ€™m really looking forward to this game; itโ€™s certainly shaping up to be worth the wait. If you too are a fan of cheesy superheroes, then you just may want to keep an eye on Altitude Games and Run Run Super V.
