ByteDance to end operations of social app Feiliao

ByteDance has shifted the product team working on social app Feiliao – known as Flipchat in other markets – into other internal projects, effectively ending its operations, according to a report from Chinese media outlet Tech Planet that cited a source.

The move comes over two years after Feiliao started operations. The interest-based social app combined instant messaging, video calls, and a forum-like feature for people with similar hobbies.

According to the report, Feiliao has been experiencing server issues, as written on the homepage of its app. Feiliao has also not received any updates for more than a year.

Additionally, the new version of the Duoshan app, which allowed users to send short videos to each other, was also found to be not accepting new users. Those with existing Doushan accounts were also asked to merge them with their accounts on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

ByteDance is also said to be setting up six new business units in a restructuring effort. This includes three of the company’s offerings – news and content platform Toutiao, search engine Baike, and video-sharing app Xigua Video – all merging with Douyin.
