ByteDance to launch Chinese music-streaming app later this year

“TikTok’s parent company ByteDance plans to release a music-streaming product for the domestic market later this year,” Pandaily reported.

Details:

  • The app has tentatively been named Feile and will be managed by TikTok’s front desk, market, and algorithm teams.
  • The front desk is directed by Alex Zhu, vice president of product and strategy at ByteDance. Meanwhile, the market team handles copyright publicity and distribution for musicians on the platform, and the algorithm team provides technical support.

Dive deeper:

  • In December 2019, ByteDance piloted a new music app in India and Indonesia to take on the likes of Spotify and Apple Music.
  • The company also came under fire for copyright infringement after Vietnamese entertainment giant VNG sued ByteDance for featuring songs on TikTok owned by VNG unit Zing without the needed licenses.
