Byju’s senior VP leaves to lead US software firm

Cherian Thomas, the former CEO of Byju’s subsidiary Osmo, has joined Impending, an Apple-focused software studio.

In 2017, he became part of Byju’s team as a vice president for international business and was later promoted to senior VP. Last year, he took on the CEO role at Osmo, the US edtech startup that Byju’s acquired for US$120 million in 2019.

Prior to these roles, Thomas co-founded and sold Cucumbertown, a startup for food bloggers, in 2016. He was also an early employee at Zynga, the gaming major behind titles like FarmVille.

As the CEO of Impending, Thomas will focus on building and scaling the US-based firm’s product portfolio while growing a global talent pool.

“Impending espouses everything I’d do if I were to start again,” Thomas said in a statement. “It’s all about executing, failing, evolving, re-releasing, and scaling without being questioned.”

He joins the growing list of exits from Byju’s. In June this year, the Indian edtech giant saw several resignations from its board amid the company’s falling valuation. This was followed by directors of Aakash Educational Services, another subsidiary of Byju’s, leaving in July.
