Joline Tang was studying at the Singapore Management University in 2017 when she decided to start blogging about sustainable living. Little did she know that penning the occasional article about being a conscious consumer would be her first step towards building ecommerce platform The Sustainability Project.
“I didn’t actually have any aim in mind, it was just to share,” she recalls.
Tang soon observed that only a handful of brands supported a zero- or even low-waste lifestyle, so there was an opportunity for her to be an advocate through a business. That’s when she launched The Sustainability Project as an online shop, selling products such as reusable straws, beeswax wraps, and organic tote bags.
But running the business by herself wasn’t easy, and Tang had to find ways to stand out as sustainability rose in prominence and spawned competitors in the market.
On this episode of Startup Snapshot, Tang talks about how she got into sustainable living, her journey as a startup founder, and the challenges she faces as a “solopreneur.”
