Court slaps $7.3m fine on Bukalapak in office project lawsuit

Indonesia-based Bukalapak has been found guilty by the South Jakarta District Court in an office project case against local property development company Harmas Jalesveva. The court sentenced the ecommerce firm to a fine of 107.4 billion rupiah (US$7.3 million) for the losses suffered by the plaintiff.

The court said the plaintiff had suffered material losses for five years due to architectural finishing work, granite installation, granite countertop procurement, and electronic work, among others.

Harmas Jalesveva filed this lawsuit in July 2022, with an initial claim for losses of up to 1.1 trillion rupiah (US$74.7 million). Apart from Bukalapak, Harmas Jalesveva was also suing two other companies: Leads Property Service Indonesia and Cahaya Karya Makmur.

Bukalapak released an official statement last year saying that it had intended to collaborate with Harmas Jalesveva for workspace leasing but the plan was canceled.

This is the second lawsuit filed by Harmas Jalesveva. The first, which was filed in April 2021, was rejected by the court.
