How to build an authentic leadership style

I’m not sure about you, but I’ve had many different bosses before. The micromanager, the best friend boss, the stoic boss — you name it, I’ve experienced it.

But out of them all, there was one supervisor who had a tremendous impact on my work, confidence, and even job satisfaction. She was always willing to listen and help, and even though I was just an intern back then, she didn’t take my opinion any less seriously. She would praise me genuinely when I did a good job and communicate tactfully but honestly with me when I messed up.

Her leadership style motivated me to be more creative, transparent, and do a good job day after day. Recently, I found out that there was actually a term for this kind of approach – it’s called “authentic leadership.”

Traditional leadership styles mostly focus on being assertive, top-down, or inspirational. But in recent years, authentic leadership, which is a more inclusive approach, has taken center stage. Its popularity may be because it has been proven to result in higher employee job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and workplace happiness.
