Traveloka joins the burgeoning e-grocery market in Indonesia

Indonesian unicorn Traveloka has entered the e-grocery market as it awaits the travel industry’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. Called Mart, the new service offers frozen food, fresh produce, and personal care items, among others.

The company has partnered with several grocery stores and supermarkets in Greater Jakarta for its latest offering, including the Indonesian subsidiary of South Korea’s Lotte Mart. Like its Traveloka Eats food delivery feature, Mart is available on the main Traveloka app and currently offers free delivery fees without a minimum transaction amount.

Demand for online groceries has grown as Indonesian consumers stay home due to Covid-19 restrictions. Players like Sayurbox and HappyFresh have been present for some time, but larger unicorns have also made moves into the space.

Recently, ecommerce giant Bukalapak introduced an e-grocery startup called AlloFresh. The company is a joint venture with Trans Retail, a supermarket chain operator whose parent firm is conglomerate CT Corp Group.

This came after other firms made their e-grocery plays. Blibli announced plans to acquire a majority stake in Ranch Market operator Boga Supra Lestari in September 2021. A month later, GoTo snapped up over 6.74% of Matahari Putra Prima.

Best known as an online travel agent, Traveloka has branched out to food delivery, skills workshops, Covid-19 test bookings, and even fintech as the pandemic batters the travel industry.

Earlier this year, the company collaborated with Blue Bird to launch an online taxi booking service called Traveloka Quickride. This allows Traveloka users to order on-demand Blue Bird taxis.

These efforts came as the company prepares for an initial public offering, following a failed blank-check merger with Bridgetown.
