How BatikDay.com Makes Indonesian Batik Day Even Merrier

Batik is a traditional clothing style that originated from Indonesia, and the country officially celebrates the Batik Day today! And so it’s with a good sense of timing that a batik news website launched today, called BatikDay.com.

The site managed to create a trending Twitter hashtag in Indonesia today, with people attaching #BatikDay to their tweets to show their support for Indonesian culture, rather than to promote the website itself. But the hashtag has served its purpose very well – to spread the word that the batik belongs to Indonesia, and that the citizens are very proud of it.

BatikDay.com is also hosting a batik portal design competition. There are seven websites in the running, including Indonesian forum Kaskus.com and news portal Kompas.com. Interestingly, there is a section called “Stylish Batik” where it shows off people’s testimonies from several countries about how cool the batik is, and how they’ve used it for fashion. So far there are only female testimonies at the site though.

BatikDay is supported by three Indonesian ministries: the culture and tourism ministry, the state-owned enterprises ministry, and the ICT ministry.

Happy Batik Day everyone!
