Last week, we reported that it would take a full twenty days to repair the internet sea cable that connects Hong Kong and US to the rest of Southeast Asia. And if you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did. The same AAG cable got cut again, this time just four kilometers down from the original break, which is 68 kilometers off the coast of Hong Kong.
According to Tuoi Tre news, the operator will mend the new breakage right after fixing the first one. Given that the first break was promised to be fixed by October 1, everyone affected by this in Southeast Asia will have to extend that another two days. So Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, and all the countries that feel the burn of a broken cable, sit tight till October 3.

Vietnam and Myanmar will be impacted the most. Vietnam only has five internet sea cables that connect it to the world and the severing of one has profound impacts on the national internet speed. But Myanmar’s internet is even more nascent. Ooredoo, the Qatari telecom, which just launched in Myanmar last month, was immediately affected by the cable cut. This did not bode well for the initial launch of their telco services.
