Chinese search giant Baidu has unveiled a voice translation app called AskADoctor (in English). It gives users a diagnosis after they voice their symptoms. It tells users what sickness they might have as well as the odds on the diagnosis being correct. It then directs users to a nearby doctor.
According to Baidu researcher Wei Fan, most Chinese internet users turn to the web for medical information. He claims voice search is speedier than typing. That’s unsurprising, given the difficulty of keying in Chinese characters on keyboards.
The project is one of the first to come out of Baidu’s deep learning division after it brought on Andrew Ng, a noted data scientist who was previously a researcher at Google. The division had built Deep Image, a computer vision algorithm for recognizing images.
