Here are 4 investments by Singapore’s Crystal Horse you didn’t hear about

Crystal Horse recently topped up five digits in Kluje, a home renovation site.

Crystal Horse Investments is a stallion among seed investors in Southeast Asia. Already, the Singapore- and Malaysia-based firm has made 49 investments in four years.

Its returns aren’t shabby: it made an estimated 3x from its exits, above the norm for angel investors in the US and UK. And it’s still galloping along steadily, making a bunch of new investments this year. It puts in five- to six-digit sums in each startup.

“If things go good and the startup has everything ready, two to three months is quite reasonable for us to close a deal,” says Michiel Wind, CEO of Crystal Horse, referring to the more mature startups it backs.

He disclosed to Tech in Asia four new investments made by the firm, adding that more are under wraps and will be revealed later. Here’s a list:

1. Lenza, an Indonesian site selling contact lenses (low six-digit investment from Crystal Horse).
2. Travelog, a travel discovery app (five-digit investment from Crystal Horse and Plug & Play).
3. Tripzilla, a Singapore travel website (six-digit amount from founders and Crystal Horse).
4. Kluje, a Singapore-based marketplace for home renovation contractors (five-digit top-up by Crystal Horse).

With a fast improving venture capital landscape in Southeast Asia, the angel fund could see many of its portfolio companies get picked up for follow-on investment. But it won’t necessarily be an easier ride.

“It’s not like suddenly we can just call them and they’ll put in $5 million,” says Wind.
