Is this mommy a kitchen queen or a travel junkie? Find out from 30 apps she loves

It’s embarrassing. Every other day, the weirdest nail polish pics, dress-up games, cartoons, and Matty B videos stare back at me from my phone. I swear I didn’t download them. But I know who did!

Motherhood means your phone, along with the apps on it, are not quite yours.

Bollywood has created the all-sacrificing, vulnerable, martyred Indian mom who can see nothing beyond her kids and her kitchen. Well, if you peep into her smartphone, you will realize that some of those things do hold true.

Here’s what I bet it will have – WhatsApp (with its multiple mommy groups related to school, sports, and extracurricular activities) and Facebook (a window to the world, especially for stay-at-home moms).

It will also likely have Amazon and Flipkart for the entire family’s ecommerce wants. It might even have apps for banking and groceries.

But take a closer look. From photo editing and vernacular script tools to fitness and fashion apps, her arsenal might surprise you. In the world’s fastest growing smartphone market, mothers are turning to apps to hone their skills, cultivate their interests, and stay connected.

When I asked dozens of mothers in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore, most wished they had space for more apps. Here are 30 I found tucked away in their phones:

Epicurious, Cookpad, Yummly

Fortunately or unfortunately, mommies still hold the reins of the Indian kitchen. Even those who employ cooks need to keep the yummy recipes coming so the kids don’t throw the stuff away when no one’s looking.

That’s where Epicurious, Yummly, and Cookpad enter the picture. Indian moms who want to impress with an international repertoire or have a zen for experimentation are likely to have these.

And new recipes do make a difference. I gave some homemade chicken noodles to my four-year-old in his school tiffin one day – instead of the usual sandwich – and he happily declared, “My mom’s the best cooker!” Cook(er) indeed!

Zomato, Swiggy, FreshMenu

These help take the load right off. Most Indian kitchens don’t have fans, so whoever is cooking has to sweat it out through the summer months. No wonder moms keep food delivery apps handy.
